NEW DELHI/KOCHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday stepped in to bring the warring states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala together to defuse the Mullaperiyar dam crisis and their officials are expected to meet to thrash out a solution.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy met the Prime Minister seeking his intervention for an early solution, a day after the confrontation between the two neighbouring states escalated. AIADMK MPs also met Singh and sought his intervention.

"The central government has taken a concrete approach. Prime Minister has stepped in. Centre has accepted Kerala's demand that it should intervene to find an early solution to the Mullaperiyar Dam issue," Chandy said. "The prime minister has intervened. Discussion between the two states on the issue will take place at the central level," he added. Chandy said he met the water resources minister Pavan Kumar Bansal on the directions of the prime minister.

Batticaloa observed Heroes Day, defying SL military orders

Meanwhile, a large number of SL Army and Speical Task Force personnel were deployed in Batticaloa city and suburbs, following information that pamphlets had been distributed in remembrance of the Heroes at some localities of Batticaloa city.

According to TNA MP C.Yogeswaran, the SL Police cancelled all public events that were to be attended by Batticaloa district TNA parliamentarians.

A book release event scheduled for Sunday at Chinthaama'ni Pi'l'laiyaar temple, located 1 km north of Batticaloa city, was put off by another day due to the warning of the police, said the parliamentarian.

Likewise, the release of a magazine Kathiravan (meaning Sun), which was to be held at Aaraiyampathi, 10 km south of Batticaloa city, was also cancelled at the last minute.
